Marie Skłodowska Curie was a Polish-born scientist who conducted basic research in the field of radioactivity. She was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize and the first person to win twice. She is the only person to have won the award in two sciences (chemistry and physics) and the first professor at the University of Paris.
Marie left Poland to go to Paris in 1891 to begin a degree at the University of Paris. Marie met Pierre Curie, whom she eventually married and worked with for many years. She tried to return to Poland and study at the University of Warsaw, but was rejected because she was a woman. He returned to Paris to begin work at the University of Paris.
